I started giving blood in 1975. Over the past almost 50 years I have given countless gallons of blood. 

 

Why do I continue to give?  Donating blood is a wonderful way to be a part of the community.  It is an easy way to make a huge impact.  You will never know who your donation has helped, but you do know for certain that you have impacted a life with your donation.  I am grateful for the opportunity to be part of the Community Blood Bank.

I donate simply because it’s the right thing to do. I always enjoy my visits to the platelet side and leave with a feeling happiness knowing I just might be helping someone who desperately needs it. The staff always makes me feel very appreciated too.

I became a blood donor because my Dad was a consistent blood donor & I would always ask him about the bandage on his arm when he came home from donating. This made me want to become a donor too. I was thrilled when an employee from the blood bank talked to me about being a platelet donor and that I could donate more frequently. I encourage anyone that can to become a blood donor because it helps so many and requires little sacrifice.

Years ago, I experienced severe postpartum complications following the birth of my daughter, Audra. I came about as close to dying as possible without actually doing so. My surgeon later told me that I must have a guardian angel because she was certain I wasn’t going to make it.

My guardian angels included the people who selflessly donated the blood that saved my life. Had I not been in the hospital with available blood right there, I wouldn’t have made it to surgery. As a result, I have had precious family time that I very nearly missed. My kids know their mom. I am forever immeasurably grateful for the kindness of strangers.

To those who haven’t considered donating before: know that you are literally saving a life with your gift. And do those who donate, THANK YOU for your compassion and generosity.”

As an RN, I knew the importance of donating blood and the need for an adequate supply. I set a goal of 10 gallons. When I reached that, I reset for 20 gallons, which I did in 29 years.
